App Designer: Watch the Video, See the Tech Talk

Last week was a big week for us. Among the barrage of announcements, we unveiled App Designer, a new drag-and-drop UI design capability. Designer is a plug-in for Appcelerator Studio which is available, in beta, as part of the new Appcelerator Labs. We spent quite a bit of time looking for and crafting a solution that caters to cross-platform and the needs of our community. Some of the highlights of Designer that you (hopefully) saw last week include:

  • Visually design and develop apps for iOS, Android, and Windows—all from a single canvas.
  • More than a design tool, the “scratchpad” palette generates best practice, production-quality code—it writes the Alloy View XML and TSS code for you.
  • Simultaneous, bi-directional updates allow seamless movement between design and code.
  • And of course, it is purpose-built for cross-platform, so you can see the impact of your changes across different platforms and device types.

Bullet points are well and good, but it’s best to see it in action to really get a feel for how it works, so we’ve put together the overview video below. Check out the video and if you want to give it a try yourself, there is a quick start guide on the App Designer page in Labs.

We also have a Tech Talk planned this Thursday, September 24th where we’ll go a bit deeper and answer your questions. Register here to join us—I hope to see you there.

  1. I like this feature, especially the ease of use for people not familiar with programming. So now you can actually wireframe directly onto the platform instead of copying a paper-prototype or external wireframe.

There is one thing I dislike though: the point where you want to add a style class through the thing in the top right of the screen. You have to hand-type a ‘variable name’. I think its a huge step forward to:

    – already provide all available properties, grayed out when not in use
    – or have an autocomplete on the textfield, so you know the correct syntax

It’ll take away some of the pain with different Ti versions having new/different properties

  2. Where can we go to ask detailed questions, reports bugs, and track changes on App Designer, and for that matter, Appcelerator Labs projects?
