Backpacks and Charity Apps: Appcelerator in the Community

Last week Appcelerator’s Mountain View headquarters partnered with the Family Giving Tree in a backpack drive to support low-income students around the Bay Area.  AppC employees took some time out of their work day to fill 200 hundred backpacks with necessary school supplies for students in grades K-12.  The Family Giving Tree serves seven counties in the Bay Area, and Appcelerator was able to contribute to their goal of equipping 15,000 at-risk students with backpacks just in time for back-to-school.

Rather than make a simple donation, Appcelerator employees opted for a more hands-on approach by physically packing the backpacks themselves.  The diverse group, comprised of everyone from executives to interns, moved at Olympic pace, stuffing all 200 backpacks in under an hour.

This fall Appcelerator and its developer community will give back in a manner more fitting for the mobile platform specialist, with its CODESTRONG 2012 Hack-to-Help Hackathon.  Over 500 mobile developers and executives have been invited to Appcelerator’s annual CODESTRONG mobile conference held October 21-22nd, and all are invited to partake in “Hack-to-Help” the day before the conference, Sunday October 20th

The goal for the all-night hackathon is to provide charities with a big boost to their fundraising efforts by leveraging the power of mobile apps.  Hack-to-Help participants will divide up into 12 teams, each assigned to a specific charity, and churn out a dozen high-caliber cross-platform mobile apps, built on Titanium.

“Our developers are some of the most talented on the planet, and we’re thrilled to bring them together to give back to charity in such a big way,” said Jeff Haynie, CEO of Appcelerator. The benefitting charities include the Avril Lavigne Foundation, Mercy Corps, the Special Olympics, and Stop Hunger Now.

Whether its backpacks in the break room or assembling some of the best mobile app developers around, Appcelerator has been making its  best efforts to give back to the community and make a lasting positive impact.
